WHAT IS STEM?

STEM is an innovative approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to nurture the creative talent of all students and develop their abilities to be problem solvers, innovators, inventors, logical thinkers, and strong communicators. Rooted in inquiry and design, STEM education spans the entire P-16 education continuum. Students in STEM environments are able to make sense of the world around them by applying concepts and ideas from the STEM disciplines across the curriculum in areas like the Arts and Humanities. The overall goal of STEM is to prepare students and ensure that they are competitive in today's global economy.

“Staying competitive in today’s 21st century global economy isn’t easy. It involves everyone from students and teachers, parents and families, and education and policy professionals, and industry leaders. Competition will require new and unique public-private partnerships designed to drive comprehensive, sustainable statewide initiatives. Collaboration amongst many players is crucial. (This) will ensure that every region, city, and school district in Ohio has access to high-quality STEM education.”

Why are the MC2STEM Hub and the new High Schools important to the region?

“The power of technology has changed economies around the world and created a demand for new skills in which imagination, intellect and invention are essential ingredients. To ensure that Ohio has a place in the 21st century economy, we must consider new ways to develop this type of intellectual capital in all students, and particularly in ways that will support our emerging economic strengths. …While it is understood that technology can lead to faster business growth, higher wages, and a large multiplier effect for the economy, what is unclear is how we ensure that our citizens possess the intellectual capital to lead this technology-based revolution. Ohio must find effective ways to better align education systems to ensure sufficient intellectual, entrepreneurial and technical talent. One important investment involves the creation of STEM schools that will partner with higher education institutions and businesses.”
