What is Design Lab Early College High School?

The Design Lab is an early college public high school with a focus on Art and Industrial Design. Design Lab will channel the interest and experience of today’s post-MTV generation student with a rich media environment and pathways to post-secondary education. The school’s innovative and rigorous curriculum is being developed with the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at its core.

Housed at Jane Addams Career Academy in Cleveland, and adjacent to the Tri-C Metropolitan campus, Design Lab offers an excellent opportunity for collaboration in the sharing of faculty expertise and facilities. These resources include Tri-C’s engineering program, which currently offers foundational coursework in Industrial Design, Media Arts, and other related programs that create a synergy around the art and science of design.

The proximity of Jane Addams to downtown also places it in the center of industry resources and the arts community. The Design Lab would be a 15 minute walk from showrooms and studios in the District of Design, the theaters in Playhouse Square, Kent State University’s Urban Design Collaborative, and Cleveland State’s College of Engineering, with the resources of Cleveland Institute of Art and Case Western Reserve University a mere high speed bus ride down the Euclid Corridor.

Design Lab will be part of an environment where students come to see themselves as a central part of an exciting cultural landscape with the ever-present expectation that continuing their education after high school is not just possible but inevitable.

Why is the Design Lab Early College High School important to the region?

The skills taught in The Design Lab will prepare our children for the careers of the future and provide the promise of a highly skilled workforce to our many corporations within the region.

“The power of technology has changed economies around the world and created a demand for new skills in which imagination, intellect and invention are essential ingredients. To ensure that Ohio has a place in the 21st century economy, we must consider new ways to develop this type of intellectual capital in all students, and particularly in ways that will support our emerging economic strengths. … One important investment involves the creation of STEM schools that will partner with higher education institutions and businesses.”

(From the Ohio “STEM RFP” issued November 2007 by the Partnership for Continuing Learning STEM Subcommittee)

How will students be recruited?

Enrollment is opened to anyone interested. Although “testing in” will not be required, consideration will be given to students who show an aptitude and significant interest in the STEM disciplines. As a regional high school, 25% of the student seats will be available to students living outside of Cleveland.
