February 14, 2008 The first grants from H.B. 119 are awarded with Cleveland Metropolitan School District supported by MC2STEM Hub receiving $600,000 to launch a new H.B. 119 STEM High School.

Spring 2008
  • Greater Cleveland Partnership spearheads a capital campaign for the embedded STEM school campuses (GE Nela Park, Great Lakes Science Center, etc…).
  • KnowledgeWorks Foundation works with CMSD and the Cleveland Hub to design and launch an additional STEM high school with a focus on Industrial Design and Technology.
  • MC2STEM High School and Design Lab High School begin accepting online applications. The Hub constructs the first online applications in CMSD history.
  • The Hub hosts the 1st annual STEM Innovation Expo at the Great Lakes Science Center.
Summer 2008
  • Heads of School and teachers are hired for each new high school.
  • All teachers and heads of school are taken to a 1-week STEM intensive teacher training course at Rochester Polytechnic Institute paid for with funds from OSLN.
  • Incoming freshmen to Design Lab begin a week long orientation fashioned after a college orientation with team collaboration on design concepts at the Cleveland Institute of Art with support from Tri-C and the Cleveland Foundation.
  • MC2STEM High School opens at the Great Lakes Science Center for 100 freshmen.
  • Design Lab Early college high school opens for 100 freshmen at their school across the street from Cuyahoga Community College.
Fall 2008  & Winter 2008-2009
  • CMSD and GE Lighting reach an agreement for the MC2STEM School to become the first high school in the US embedded on a corporate campus at GE Lighting and Industrial facility in East Cleveland.
  • Students at MC2STEM High School host a sustainability conference at the Great Lakes Science Center to exhibit their student projects on sustainability.
  • Case Western Reserve University becomes the home of Cleveland’s STEM Hub.
  • MC2STEM Hub begins accepting online applications for the 2nd year class at both high schools.
  • MC2STEM high school receives a second round of state funding.
  • MC2STEM High School at GE’s Nela Park Grand Opening attracts Governor Strickland, Senator Voinovich, Mayor Frank Jackson, Mayor Eric Brewer, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, GE Lighting & Industrial CEO Michael Petrus and CMSD CEO Eugene Sanders and over 200 additional guests.
  • MC2STEM Hub and CMSD Hub hold the first of two lottery drawings for incoming 2009/2010 freshmen.
  • CMSD reaches a multi year agreement with The Great Lakes Science Center to keep future freshmen classes of MC2STEM high school at GLSC.
Spring 2009
  • OSLN hosts a statewide STEM Advocacy Day at the statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. Students, parents, and partners from both Design Lab and MC2STEM high schools participated.
  • MC2STEM Hub hosts 2nd annual community wide STEM Innovation Expo at GLSC. 
  • The second lottery for incoming students is held. 100 students have been accepted into the 2nd incoming freshman class for each school. A waiting list is created for spots that may open up during the summer.
Summer 2009
  • Both schools promote their freshmen class members to their sophomore year.
  • Cleveland State University receives the National Science Foundation Noyce Award to launch UTeach, an innovative STEM teacher preparation program.
  • MC2STEM Hub in partnership with Cleveland State University hosts a 3-day Engineering Conference for 40 area teachers focused on STEM education classroom projects. 
  • Both schools begin their sophomore year.
  • Design Lab students engage in internships with organizations throughout the city all funded by federal stimulus dollars in partnership with Youth Opportunities Unlimited.
  • Through a partnership with The Ingenuity Festival MC2STEM Hub arranges for 25 STEM students to participate as ambassadors at the Festival.
  • Incoming freshman for both schools begin a week long orientation fashioned after a college orientation with team collaboration on STEM related activities funded by OSLN.
  • All students begin in-classroom work at both schools.
Fall 2009 & Winter 2009-2010
  • MC2STEM High School sophomores, educators and chaperons attend a 6-day expedition at the Biosphere and work on experiments of sustainability side by side with their hosts from the University of Arizona.
  • Speaker of the Ohio House Armond Buddish visits Design Lab Early College High School.
  • MC2STEM high school receives a visit from President Obama's Administration as a part of the Department of Education’s learning tour.
  • MC2STEM High School co-hosts Sustainability Scholars Day in collaboration with Bioneers Cleveland.
  • The Cleveland STEM Hub hosts the 2nd annual holiday gathering at The Greater Cleveland Partnership.
  • The Cleveland STEM Hub and the founding partners attend a round table STEM Education meeting with and at the request of Congresswoman Marcia Fudge at her office.
